Licensed Practical Nurse
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) assigned to the Community Based Outpatient Clinic is held accountable for delivering direct patient care to adult through geriatric Veterans for both acute and chronic diseases in an outpatient clinic setting. He/she recognizes age related needs and demonstrates knowledge and care appropriate to those age groups. He/she considers the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of Veterans and demonstrates competence in doing so. Recognizes culture differences in Veterans and demonstrates ability to understand and respect the Veteran's culture values, beliefs, and practices. He/she provides Veterans and their significant other/s with basic education to prevent acute and chronic disease, and to maintain and/or improve health status and quality of life in the outpatient setting. He/she may be a primary nurse to a provider in general medical and/or specialty clinics under that provider's immediate supervision for the day-to-day operation of that/those clinics, and requires little direct supervision. The Nurse Manager/RN designee provides professional nursing consultation, supervision and/or back-up as needed. The LPN-6 may be the sole nurse, under direct clinical supervision of the provider during Extended Hours Clinics. He/she interfaces with a variety of VA and community providers directly, over the phone, through correspondence, and electronically via the computer, fax modality, and teleconferencing. Six months of qualifying experience as a LPN or LVN. OR Experience and Education. Graduation from an approved school and one year of experience that involved nursing care work in a hospital outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures. OR Education. Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration. GS-05:
Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-04 level or equivalent AND fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-04 LPN/LVN. GS-06:
Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent AND fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-5 LPN/LVN. You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities based on your application:
1. Technically proficient in initiating, performing and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations. 2. Knowledge and ability to recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations, seek assistance of the RN and/or MD/DO, and initiate appropriate emergency interventions as directed. 6. Knowledge and understanding of human behavior, patient motivations and reactions to situations, and ability to appropriately utilize this knowledge in working effectively with patients, family members, and other staff. 7. Establishes constructive relationships with individual patients and their families to elicit feelings and attitudes, and to promote positive relationships, communication and socialization skills. Fosters an environment of respect for individual patient and family rights to privacy and dignity in all aspects of care delivery.
